## Meet the new starter

Your newest coworker has an email address, knows everyone's time zone, can see who needs to approve what, and never takes a lunch break. You can tag it in a chat, email it a job, or share a folder with it. Oh, and it is not a person.

That, more or less, is what Google announced on 8 October at its Gemini at Work 2026 event: the **Gemini agent**, which Google Cloud calls "a universal agent for work".

## What happened

The short version: Google wants work to start in a single prompt box. You give the Gemini agent an objective, not a step-by-step list, and it gets on with it.

According to Google, the agent plans the work, uses skills and tools, connects to a company's business systems, and "brings back something finished", inside the documents, inboxes and developer tools people already use. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said businesses come first so Google can solve the "harder problems around security, scale, and performance", with consumers to follow later.

For now it is in private preview for selected business customers. So if you go looking for it today, you probably will not find it yet.

## The "own email" bit, explained

This is the part that made people smile. According to TechCrunch, the agent gets its own Google Workspace account, "as if it's just another co-worker". That means:

- **Its own email address.** You can email it work, just like a colleague.
- **Its own context.** It knows who is on which team, their time zones, who needs to approve items and what is on people's calendars.
- **Easy to reach.** You can tag it, email it, share something with it, or add it to a group chat.
- **Its own paper trail.** When it does something, the audit trail is attributed to the agent, not to a person.

There is also a "tasks inbox" where you can watch what it is doing, including its thinking, the smaller jobs it hands to helper agents, and its progress.

That last point is a clever touch. When an AI does work under its own name, you can always see what it did and what a human did, which makes it much easier to hand it more. We are writing more about this in this week's companion piece on AI agents and logins.

## It works with tools you already use

The other notable thing is how widely it connects. According to TechCrunch, the agent can link to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, Snowflake and more, plus any server that uses the Model Context Protocol, a common way for AI tools to plug into other software.

It is also flexible about the AI underneath. By default it picks the best model for the task, but users can choose another, including models from other companies, starting with Anthropic's Claude. Google says it plans to add open-source and other models later. There are also new spending controls, including real-time spend caps, to help businesses keep AI costs in check.

The friendly takeaway: the big AI companies increasingly agree that the magic is not one particular model. It is connecting AI to the context of your business, meaning your files, your people, your approvals and your tools.

## A few big numbers

At the event, Pichai said Gemini now has more than 1 billion monthly active users, and that nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies use Gemini Enterprise at work. Google named early testers including On, Shopify and PayPal.

## Can I use it?

Probably not yet. It is a private preview for selected business customers, and the consumer version will come later. Things to watch for over the next few months:

- When it opens up to more Workspace business plans.
- What it costs once it leaves preview.
- How easy it is for a small team to set up approvals and limits.

## What it means for a small business

"AI coworkers" are moving from science fiction to product announcements. You do not need to hire one this week, but it is a good moment to think about three simple questions:

1. **Which jobs would you hand to an AI coworker?** Think about follow-ups, summaries, scheduling and first drafts.
2. **Who approves its work?** Every AI coworker needs a human it reports to.
3. **What stays with a person?** Decisions like payments and payroll are a natural place to keep a human in charge while you build confidence.

Having those answers ready will make any AI tool, from any company, easier to bring on board.

## Where Walter fits

We like this direction. The more AI tools agree that business context is what counts, the better for everyone. Walter is being built to pull that context together across the tools and AI models you already use, so whichever AI coworker you choose understands how your business actually runs.
